Executive Summary¶
This document is a dated snapshot of who is making Project Zomboid video content on YouTube as of 2026-10-07, what each channel is doing with the game, and where the observable catalogue is thin. Nine channels were opened first-hand and are profiled: ambiguousamphibian, Pr1vateLime, NurseVO, Retanaru, Mattsi, MrAtomicDuck, Awpenheimer, ZiubisPZ and Meyhem Gaming Plays [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. For each, the channel page and the public upload feed were read on the retrieval date, so the figures below are "as displayed on 2026-10-07", never creator analytics.
The headline observations are narrow and countable. Two of the biggest channels in the sample keep Project Zomboid as only part of their slate: ambiguousamphibian's last fifteen uploads include one Project Zomboid title [4], and Pr1vateLime's include eight [5]. NurseVO's last fifteen are almost entirely Project Zomboid streams [6]. Retanaru kept analysing the unstable branch in its titles until June 2026 and now titles videos against plain "B42" [7]. Mattsi's most recent upload is dated 2026-02-06 [8].
Build 42 stable has moved on since the creator track's foundation was written: 42.21 reached stable on 2026-09-28 [1], so stable-branch B42 footage dated before that predates the 42.21 changes, which include zombie-persistence fixes, XXL-tree cutaway changes and Welder starting-recipe changes [3][17]. Document confidence is Medium. The facts are first-hand and dated, but they are a sample (the most recent fifteen uploads per channel plus four search probes), the search probes are ranked by YouTube's own algorithm, and the Twitch layer of the landscape could not be opened at all.
Key Takeaways¶
- Nine channels were opened and profiled with dated upload evidence; the displayed subscriber counts range from 4.83 thousand to 1.68 million (cited, as displayed 2026-10-07) [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11].
- Project Zomboid share of recent output differs sharply by channel: 1 of 15 titles for ambiguousamphibian, 8 of 15 for Pr1vateLime, 14 of 15 for NurseVO (cited, title counts) [4][5][6].
- Retanaru is the only profiled channel whose recent titles are dominated by patch-by-patch mechanics analysis, and its titles dropped the word "Unstable" in the two most recent uploads (cited) [7].
- Mattsi's last upload is dated 2026-02-06, eight months before the retrieval date (cited) [8].
- B42 stable is 42.21 as of 2026-09-28; the preceding stable was 42.20.0 (2026-07-29) with hotfixes, so stable footage dated before 2026-09-28 is pre-42.21 (cited) (B42) [1][2][17].
- The four topic probes (modding, dedicated servers, lore, B41-to-B42 changes) each returned a populated result page, so "gap" here means thin recency on the current build, not absence (cited, search snapshot) [13][14][15][16].
- No Twitch channel page was opened; Twitch coverage is not mapped (cited limitation).
Purpose¶
A creator planning a Project Zomboid channel, or a KB maintainer deciding which documents give a creator the most to work with, needs to know who is already publishing, in what format, how often, and on which game build. This document supplies that map. It deliberately stops at observation; the recommendations live in Practical Guidance and are labelled as judgement.
Scope¶
Covered: YouTube channels that were opened on 2026-10-07; the format each publishes as evidenced by recent upload titles; observed upload dates; whether titles reference B42 stable; and four search-result probes used to test topic coverage. Subscriber and view figures appear only as displayed by YouTube on the retrieval date.
Not covered: Twitch, Kick and other live platforms (not opened); channel revenue or analytics; private individuals (only public channel names are used); judgements about quality; and game mechanics, which belong to the Players and Modders tracks. The channel sample is not exhaustive; channels absent from this document are simply not verified here. For the format taxonomy and launch-window analysis, go to creator-foundation rather than re-reading it here.
Definitions¶
- Upload feed — the public per-channel feed YouTube serves at
youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml, listing the most recent uploads with publish date and a view counter [4]. - Displayed figure — a subscriber, video or view number exactly as the YouTube page or feed showed it on 2026-10-07; platform-rounded and not analytics [4].
- Title share — the count of a channel's last fifteen feed titles that name Project Zomboid, a derived count that does not prove which build a video was recorded on.
- Search probe — one YouTube search query run on 2026-10-07 with the first eight results noted by uploader and displayed relative age [13][14][15][16].
- Unstable / stable — the opt-in test branch and the public default branch of the game respectively [1][3].
Build Applicability¶
| Build | Applies | Verified against | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| B41 (legacy41) | Context only | — | Appears as the build older guide videos were made on; a legacy line still receives hotfixes [2] |
| B42 (stable) | Yes | 42.21 (release sequence and change list) | 42.21 was released to stable on 2026-09-28 after an unstable pass beginning 2026-09-23 [1][3]; this document records channel behaviour, not mechanics |
The ecosystem data in this document is a 2026-10-07 snapshot and decays far faster than any game build. Titles that mention "B42" or "Build 42" do not state a point release, so none of the channel videos is claimed to be 42.20- or 42.21-accurate. This revision re-checked the release sequence against the Steam posts [1][2][3] and the TIS forum 42.21 patch notes (read in abridged form) [17]; channel and search data were not re-fetched.
Reference¶
Method¶
For each channel the page at its canonical youtube.com/channel/ address
was opened, and its public upload feed was read on 2026-10-07 [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12].
Subscriber and video counts are those the channel page displayed; view
counts are those the feed attached to each upload at the same moment. Four
search queries were also run on the same date to sample topic coverage
[13][14][15][16].
Channel table¶

Observed cadence and Project Zomboid share¶
- ambiguousamphibian. The fifteen newest feed entries span 2026-06-03 to 2026-10-02, with a median gap of roughly a week between uploads. Exactly one title names Project Zomboid: "How Long Can I Survive a FLOODED World in Project Zomboid?", dated 2026-06-26, which predates the 42.20 stable release of 2026-07-29 [2][4]. The other fourteen titles name other games, including Stellaris, RimWorld and Kenshi [4].
- Pr1vateLime. The fifteen newest entries span 2026-08-08 to 2026-10-05. Eight name Project Zomboid, six are an episodic series in a space-trading game, and one covers another title [5]. The Project Zomboid titles include a five-part "28 Minutes Later Challenge" run (2026-09-02 to 2026-09-22), a Necroa-virus supercut (2026-08-11), a mod survival video (2026-08-14) and a limb-loss challenge (2026-09-30) [5]. The cadence is roughly one upload every three to five days [5].
- NurseVO. The fifteen newest entries span 2026-09-14 to 2026-10-07, almost one per day. Fourteen of the fifteen titles carry the "#LIVE" tag and name Project Zomboid [6]. Topics in the titles include an NPC simulation mod, an extraction-style mode, a "Viewpoint" mode and a random-server join [6].
- Retanaru. The fifteen newest entries span 2025-10-20 to 2026-09-27, an irregular cadence with gaps of about two months in places (2026-06-23 to 2026-08-24) [7]. Titles through 2026-06-23 explicitly say "Unstable"; the 2026-08-24 guns video and the 2026-09-27 vision video are titled against "B42" without that word [7].
- Mattsi. The fifteen newest entries span 2025-09-23 to 2026-02-06. Thirteen are dated between 2025-09-23 and 2025-10-31, then single uploads follow on 2025-11-05 and 2026-02-06 [8]. The 2025-11-05 animal guide and 2025-10-11 first-month guide are the two entries with the highest displayed views in that window (56,172 and 104,555) [8].
- MrAtomicDuck. The eight newest entries span 2026-09-01 to 2026-09-30 and include a news video on the unstable branch returning (2026-09-27) and a moodle explainer (2026-09-30) [9].
- Awpenheimer. The newest entry (2026-09-26) is a video on the 42.21 update; earlier entries cover a first-person mod and a multiplayer "hardcore ironman" run [10].
- ZiubisPZ. Eight entries across 2026-09-15 to 2026-10-05, mostly mod lists and a base-location video titled for "Build 42 Stable" (2026-10-05) [11].
- Meyhem Gaming Plays. Eight entries across 2026-09-26 to 2026-10-07, including a "B42.21 What's New and What's Fixed" video dated 2026-09-26 with 790 displayed views [12].
B42 stable coverage in titles¶
Titles naming B42 stable or 42.21 specifically, as seen in the feeds: Awpenheimer's 42.21 update video (2026-09-26) [10], Meyhem Gaming Plays' B42.21 video (2026-09-26) [12], ZiubisPZ's "Build 42 Stable" base locations video (2026-10-05) [11], and MrAtomicDuck's unstable-branch news video (2026-09-27) [9]. Retanaru's two newest titles say "B42" without a point release [7]. No title in ambiguousamphibian's sample names a build [4]. The official 42.21 announcement states that the build went from unstable to stable on 2026-09-28 and adds that releases will follow an unstable-then-stable path as standard procedure [1]. The forum change list for 42.21 includes fixes for vanishing and duplicated zombies, XXL-tree cutaway changes, a Welder-occupation starting-recipe change and map and UI updates, so a "what's new in 42.21" video can be checked against a primary list [17].
Topic-coverage probes¶
All four probes are YouTube search result pages fetched on 2026-10-07, with the first eight video results noted. Relative ages are as displayed by YouTube. Search ranking is algorithmic and personalised by nothing the fetcher supplied beyond language and region defaults, so these are snapshots, not census counts.
| Probe query | What the first eight results showed |
|---|---|
| lua modding tutorial b42 | Three series entries from one uploader aged 7 to 11 months, one 3 years old, one 1 year old, one tutorial-style "B42 Mod Guide" aged 1 month, and two mod-list videos aged 2 weeks and 1 month [13] |
| dedicated server setup b42 | Eight server-setup or hosting videos: three aged 9 months, one 4 months, four aged 2 months, including one titled for B42.20 [14] |
| lore knox event | Eight lore videos: two aged 1 month or less, one 3 months, one 5 months, one 9 months, two aged 1 year, and one 3 years [15] |
| b41 to b42 what changed | Eight comparison or recap videos: six aged about 1 year and two aged 1 and 2 months [16] |
B41 vs B42 Delta¶
Not applicable — single-build document. The subject is the creator landscape around B42 stable, and the only build-related fact it relies on is the stable-promotion sequence of 42.21 [1]. Mechanical differences between B41 and B42 are covered in players-b41-to-b42-transition.
Practical Guidance¶
These are judgements built on the observations above. They introduce no new facts.
Reading the competitive picture¶
- The channels that appear to compete most directly for a new creator's attention in the current-build space are those whose recent titles are mostly Project Zomboid: NurseVO for live play [6], Pr1vateLime for challenge series [5], and Retanaru for mechanics [7]. The very large ambiguousamphibian channel currently publishes little Project Zomboid [4], so its subscriber count says little about direct competition for B42 search traffic.
- MrAtomicDuck, Awpenheimer, ZiubisPZ and Meyhem Gaming Plays were all publishing build-news or mod-list content within days of the 42.21 stable date [9][10][11][12]. That slot (update coverage within a week) is populated; a new entrant is unlikely to win it on speed alone.
- Treat displayed views as relative signals within one channel's own catalogue, not as targets. Mattsi's two highest-viewed entries in the sample are long-form guides, while its short clips sit near or under a few thousand views [8]; that supports, but does not prove, a guides-over-clips conclusion for that channel.
Gap candidates the KB can fact-support¶
Each candidate pairs an observation with a KB document that can supply verified facts. They are candidates, not proven under-served topics.
- Current-build transition content. Six of eight transition-query results were about a year old [16]. A video built from players-b41-to-b42-transition and dated to 42.21 would be among the freshest results for that query.
- Verified beginner material. Mattsi's high-view beginner guides date from autumn 2025 [8], well before the 2026-07-29 stable release [2]. players-beginner-guide-b42 gives a fact base for a refresh.
- Modded-server operations. The server-setup probe returned hosting-company and setup tutorials aged two to nine months [14]; none of the eight titles, as displayed, mentions mods. admins-modded-server-runbook supports that angle.
- Mod-making for current stable. Only one tutorial-style result in the modding probe was a month old or newer [13], while mod-list videos were the freshest entries. modders-first-mod-tutorial-b42 gives a verified base.
- Lore. The lore probe is already well supplied with recent uploads [15]; this is a weak gap candidate and probably best left to creators with a narrative voice.
Using the map¶
Pair this document with creator-format-catalogue to choose a format, creator-content-calendar to schedule it, and creator-cross-promotion-funnel to route viewers. Re-run the feed and probe method before relying on any cadence or recency claim.
Common Pitfalls & Troubleshooting¶
- Quoting a subscriber count without a date. The figures here are displayed values for one day [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]; reuse them only with that date.
- Inferring build from a title. "Build 42" in a title does not give a point release [7][10][12]. Check the video itself before treating it as 42.20- or 42.21-accurate.
- Counting a channel's size as Project Zomboid reach. The largest channel in the sample published one Project Zomboid title in its last fifteen uploads [4].
- Treating a search probe as a census. The probes list eight results each [13][14][15][16]; topics can have far more coverage below those eight.
- Assuming the map is complete. Only channels opened on 2026-10-07 are listed; omission is not a statement about any other channel.
Community Notes & Unverified Claims¶
Claim 1 — The large PZ creators also run their main audience on Twitch¶
- Claim: Community discussion and stat-site listings associate several of these creators, notably NurseVO, with Project Zomboid live streaming on Twitch in addition to YouTube.
- Why unverified: No Twitch channel page was opened during this research, so Twitch presence, cadence and viewership are unobserved. Only YouTube live-tagged uploads were seen [6].
- Confidence: Low. The YouTube "#LIVE" tags in [6] are consistent with live play but say nothing about the Twitch platform.
Claim 2 — Long-form guides outperform short clips for evergreen search¶
- Claim: Creators commonly say that long beginner guides keep earning views for months while short clips spike and fade.
- Why unverified: The view counters in the feeds [8] are single-day snapshots with no time series, so velocity and decay cannot be measured.
- Confidence: Low. One channel's top-viewed entries [8] fit the claim, but a single channel and a single snapshot is thin support.
Claim 3 — Update-news slots are saturated within days of a stable release¶
- Claim: Creators say the first week after a stable release is crowded with news videos, making late arrivals invisible.
- Why unverified: Four channels were seen publishing around 42.21 [9][10][11][12], but how many others did, and how they ranked, was not measured.
- Confidence: Low. The observed four are an unknown fraction of the real total.
Risks & Caveats¶
- Sampling. Fifteen uploads per channel can miss a series, hiatus or format change that sits just outside the window [4][5][6][7][8].
- Counter semantics. Feed view counters and channel-page figures are YouTube-rounded and refresh on YouTube's schedule; counts for fresh uploads will be low relative to what they later become [6][12].
- Pr1vateLime and MrAtomicDuck video totals were not captured from the page text; only subscriber counts are shown [5][9].
- Meyhem Gaming Plays displayed no subscriber figure in the captured page text, so no scale is claimed [12].
- Staleness. Upload cadence changes within weeks. The review date of 2027-01-05 is a soft deadline; a creator-facing decision should use a fresh pull.
- Release context. The game facts rest on the Steam announcements [1][2] [3] and the abridged 42.21 forum list [17]; hotfixes after 2026-09-28 may already have changed what a tutorial should say.
Verification Steps¶
- Open each channel's canonical page [4]–[12] and compare the displayed subscriber and video counts against the table.
- Fetch each channel's upload feed (the
feeds/videos.xmlpath on youtube.com, with the channel id from the cited canonical URL as itschannel_idparameter) and recount the Project Zomboid titles among the newest fifteen. - Repeat the four search probes [13][14][15][16] and compare uploader and age distributions.
- Confirm the 42.21 stable date and the unstable-first procedure in the Steam announcements [1][3], and the change list in the forum post [17].
- For Claim 1, open each creator's Twitch page directly and record whatever it shows with a date.
Open Questions¶
- Which Twitch channels carry Project Zomboid content, and with what cadence? Resolved by opening and dating each Twitch page.
- Do ambiguousamphibian or Pr1vateLime shift more of their slate back to Project Zomboid in the coming months? Re-run the feed count at the review date.
- Is Mattsi inactive or has the channel moved format? Only the next feed pull can tell [8].
- How many additional Project Zomboid channels exist outside the nine opened here? A wider search sweep would tell.
- What share of viewers on these channels are on legacy41? No source measured it.
